words of wisdom

Posted: May 22, 2017 in Uncategorized

The following are biblical verses throughout the old and new testaments that speak of wisdom and direction for God’s people. To make for easier reading all verse numbers have been omitted. No words have been added to or removed; only cut, copied, pasted and rearranged. Nothing is meant to supercede original scriptures or imply an alternate meaning out of context.

This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality. For those who find [God] find life and receive favor from the Lord. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good. Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.
These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts, do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed; do not plot evil against each other, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,” declares the Lord.
Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place. Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath. Sacrifice thank offerings to God [and] fulfill your vows to the Most High.
And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
Maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always. If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Do not fret —it leads only to evil. Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called ; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. For we live by faith, not by sight. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed —a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Everything that does not come from faith is sin.
Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
So in Christ Jesus  you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

Prayer of Blessing
Blessed is the Lord God of the universe who knows all things past, present, and future. Let us praise the One who made us from the dust and formed us into His likeness so that we might praise and glorify Him. Let us praise and glorify also His Word that He sends forth unto the earth so that we might be saved. He alone exists in perfect harmony with His Spirit and His Word. How can God be separate from His Word? How then can God not know His Spirit? The Word comes from within the Holiest of Holies and is perfect and pure just as God is perfect and pure. Let us know truth from a child’s perspective. Let all humanity open our eyes without physical limitation, for thou art too great for mindful understanding. Far above art thou, Father in heaven. Above the stars and above our minds. Let us meditate on and obey your Word, for in believing in your Word we are saved from the torments of hell and are blessed for eternity in your holy presence. Let us also recognize that by believing in your Word, we are believing in the One in whom you sent as an atonement for man’s sin. The One who became flesh and blood, perfect in every way, tempted by pure evil, but able to withstand because of pure love for His children and because of His pure obedience to the Father. Blessed is Jesus Christ who is to come as Judge and Messiah. May your kingdom come!

Let us not enforce our belief upon those who disagree with us. Instead, let those who hold truth lovingly and patiently persuade those of a lesser spiritual knowledge into right thinking. We should not get upset when atheists bash Christianity or use disparaging words to demean followers of Christ. When those of a different religion begin to call us bigots and liars, we should respond not in anger but in concise rebuke, full of truth. When we can’t answer a certain theological question or complaint then we should respond in honesty and say, “I don’t know”. We will certainly look like fools if we debase ourselves by using too much extra-biblical nonsense that contradicts scripture. Simple truths are drastically underestimated when defending the faith. Simple truths can be easily remembered by an unbeliever and may undoubtedly gnaw at the darkness inside them if it is retained in their heart. In my opinion, we should not try to convince an unbeliever by shoving the truth of the cross down their throat. It may work for some people but I think the majority will heave truth back up from being “fed too much food.” You have to work people into believing by feeding them small bits of God’s truth and this is done by speaking with goodness and practicing what you preach, while at the same time praying for them to understand the light of God.
